Samsung is set to close its custom CPU Core department. Since the release of the Galaxy S7 in 2016, Samsung has used its own Mongoose cores which is within the Exynos chip. It is reported that the Custom CPU department will be closed down and this will result into the lay off of about 300 employees.
Samsung have already officially notified the Workforce authorities of its intention to lay off workers at the Samsung Austin Research Center in Texas and another facility in San Jose, California.
According to Speculation, Samsung is expected to replace its own CPU cores, with ARM’s CPU Cores. The other possibility is to use them to make semi-custom versions, like Qualcomm or Huawei.
The decision to end production of Samsung-manufactured CPU is to increase the competitiveness of the Exynos Chipset. Samsung already produces smartphones which come in both Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets depending on the region. It appears to be good news for some, who anticipate better experience and efficiency from the Exynos in comparison with the Snapdragon.
