This foldable smartphone may just be the rumored Galaxy X.
While the Galaxy S9 and S9+ were Samsung’s main highlights of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, it is of note that there have been rumors of a Galaxy X on the way as well. It is believed that this will be a foldable smartphone.
Samsung Mobile CEO, DJ Koh, revealed some details about the rumored foldable smartphone, on the sidelines of the launch of the company’s 2018 flagship in Barcelona. It will be the company’s first foldable smartphone.
So far, foldable smartphones are a part of concepts, but the South Korean smartphone giant already confirmed that it would bring foldable OLED smartphones this year, distinguishing itself from the competition.
Koh said that he needed complete confidence that the company was delivering the best user experience when launching a new category. He further promised to be open about further details when the time comes to unveil the device.
Reports have it that Samsung already privately showcased a prototype of its foldable device at CES 2018 in Las Vegas last month. The prototype reportedly featured a 7.3-inch display panel.
The first version of the foldable device will likely fold inwards, with a model that folds outwards coming up later.
Other companies such as Apple, Huawei and Microsoft seem to also be working on building their own native foldable mobile device versions as this seems to be the next direction of the smartphone market.
Meanwhile, Koh also confirmed the development of a Bixby-powered smart speaker, and revealed that the speaker was due later this year.
