Telegram a messaging platform recently rolled out end-to-end encrypted video calling functions, on both its Android and iOS apps. The company recently announced the new feature on the seventh anniversary of its launch.
The social messaging App currently has over 400 million users and is one of the most downloaded apps.
Telegrams video calling feature is currently live in Alpha state, and is enabled with end-to-end encryption just like their voice calls. The feature, was initially limited to four (4) users for years, but is now upgraded to support about eight (8) users. Aside from that, Telegram’s recent updates also packs additional animated emoji options.
Telegram Video Calling: How to Use, Features
Video calls can be initiated from a contacts profile page. Telegram also supports picture-in-picture, allowing users scroll through chats, as well as multi-task while calling.
Videos can also be turned on or off during voice calls; the only problem with the Telegram video calling feature is the absence of the possibility of group video calls. The company has however stated that the group calling feature will be launched in the coming months, as well as other amazing features.
As mentioned earlier, all video calls made on the App are encrypted, and encryption is confirmed via the use of emojis. If the same set of emojis are displayed on both ends, it indicates that the call is end-to-end encrypted.
Telegram recently released a blog post stating “2020 highlighted the need for face-to-face communication, and our alpha version of video calls is now available on both Android and iOS”.
“Telegram has never advertised and every user has come to the app because of a recommendation from someone they trust. Strong principles and quality features speak for themselves, and millions of you listened. We’ve heard you as well, and will continue to develop features that make Telegram much more than just a messaging app”, the company added.
